Shepherdleas Wood

Tuesday, 18th November, 2025

Eleven volunteers turned out for Tuesday’s session.  That’s another whopping 33 hours of work and it meant that great progress was made on restoring the wildflower area across from the bridge separating Eltham Park South from Shepherdleas Wood.

Again, our aim was to get more light to the woodland floor by removing holly, as well as reducing compaction and fragmentation in the area, which has been caused by the narrowing of the main path through the woods.  The culprit was, as you will suspect, the spreading holly so it was important to improve this pathway and encourage walkers to use it once again.

By the end of the session, we had not only opened the area for the bluebells and wood anemone to spread into but had also built a long stretch of dead hedging along the path to protect the area within, and to ensure there is habitat and corridors for woodland animals. Another step forward in our plan to bring the woodlands back to life!

The path has been restored and the wildflower area is again protected from trampling.
