Protecting Oxleas Woodlands

The Friends of Oxleas Woodlands has submitted a formal response to the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s draft Local Plan consultation, following detailed review by the Steering Group.

Overall, we are pleased to report that the emerging plan is strongly protective of ancient woodland, designated habitats, and open space. The evidence base confirms the exceptional ecological and landscape value of Oxleas Woodlands and the surrounding connected meadows, commons, and green spaces. Importantly, no proposals were identified that would weaken existing protections.

Our response welcomes the strengthened policies on biodiversity recovery, climate resilience, and green infrastructure, which support long-term conservation work already underway in the woods. We also highlighted opportunities to direct future biodiversity and climate investment into habitat restoration, freshwater features, and improved ecological management across the wider landscape.

A key point raised in our submission is the need for strong safeguards where development is proposed next to ancient woodland, Local Nature Reserves, or other designated habitats. This includes effective buffer zones, careful lighting design, protection of woodland hydrology, and measures to reduce noise and disturbance. Strengthening these protections will help ensure Oxleas remains resilient for wildlife and people in the years ahead.

We will continue to engage positively with the Council as the Local Plan progresses and will keep members updated on any significant developments.
