Gardening Group - September Tidying
On Saturday 11 volunteers spent the morning in Jackwood having a little tidy up.
Its been so dry this year that we've deliberately not disturbed the plants more than we have absolutely had to - but now that its cooled down and is a little damper, it was time to do a bit of cutting back. We've only touched those plants that have started growing again from the base - we're all finger's crossed that they have time to get a decent amount of growth in and recover some strength before winter arrives.
A volunteer spent most of the session edging the grass - it looks so much neater that we really are going to have to re-sow the worn areas to match.
2 people went to work up on the terrace, knocking back the bramble and weeds again. This area is one of our trouble spots, but a long term fix is a way off. Another volunteer gave the two shelters at the West end of the terrace a good cleaning. The person who has previously been cleaning the shelters as a volunteer has now retired, and something else will have to be done. We're deeply thankful for all the years of cleaning that have been done!
Another group of volunteers decided they felt like doing something more robust - the path to the walled garden provided some opportunity to do some sweating. Shifting out the years of soil and grass, cutting back the overhanging shubbery and sweeping up another section took all session. Next time, we'll have to work out how to move an old tree trunk that's sitting in the middle of the path.
After all that, we finished work a little early, so that we could admire our certificates and eat flapjacks for a while.
