Friday the 7th saw 5 of our volunteers back in the wildlife garden at Jackwood, enjoying the very slight decrease in temperatures.
Today's tasks were a little weeding and tidying in the main garden. We decided to not disturb most of the beds - with the heat and the dryness it seems better to avoid any more stress that might be caused by our work. That said, there's a few weeds that were worth keeping on top of - the indestructible field bindweed for one.
Up on the terrace, the bramble and the wisteria have clearly got their roots into something that's not dried out yet. With them rampaging away, this was a good time to knock them back off of the path.
Sheers, secateurs and some elbow grease got us all the way along the terrace wall. When we tried to do this task a couple of years ago, it took nearly 2 sessions - so perhaps we are making some progress on the level of bramble and over-aged wisteria stems!
Down in the main garden, we've been experimenting about how to provide water for the bugs our plants have attracted. You may have seen some of the attempts - in fact, some of you have been refilling them for us (Thank you!). Today saw the addition of another of our most sucessful type so far - thanks go to the partner of one of our volunteers, who has a 3d printer and is not afraid to use it.
We'll see which ones we think work well over the rest of the summer!
Earlier the same day, the Fire Brigade had been called to a fire just along the hill from the garden. The fire was properly out by the time our session started. It was a little close to the garden for comfort, though, and we ended work a bit early to go and take a peak at the damage. Fingers and toes crossed for no more fires this year!
