Sunshine, birdsong, spring flowers, companionship and working together to make a difference.
That’s what our 22 amazing volunteers were treated to today - and what a great session it was too! New volunteers, returning volunteers, and core volunteers, all worked together in groups, moving in and out of different activities as they felt like a change and, somehow, everything came together to produce yet another l....o....n....g s..t..r..e..t..c..h of dead hedging and a wider, clearer path.
Post-making - hazel and holly poles are sharpened to points at the bottom.
Add to that, increased light reaching the woodland floor, a more open woodland generally, and daffodils and bluebells (when they flower) now visible to walkers on the Green Chain Walk, both at the end of the formal gardens and also on the route as it enters Jack Wood.
Holly branches dragged uphill, cut into smaller pieces, then inserted between posts.
Breaktime
During break, we had such a big group that not everybody could perch themselves on the huge fallen tree we often congregate on but, nonetheless, everyone was happily chatting in small groups about … whatever they wanted!
All hands to the deck after break, making sure the hedge was built, the woodland floor was left clear and the paths were cleared of stray stems, leaves and mud.
Another session, another improved and protected area of woodland and, looking to the future, greater biodiversity in the woodlands.
If this sounds like something you would enjoy, don't hesitate to get in touch - new volunteers are always welcome - and there's always something for everyone to do. No special skills are required, just a willingness to get stuck in.
