Clearing the Way: Seasonal Stream Clean-up in Oxleas Woods

Volunteers took to the woods alongside Ranger Adam from Greenwich Council to clear a seasonal stream that runs through part of the woodland. Though dry at this time of year, the stream plays an important role during the wetter winter months, helping to channel rainwater and prevent flooding on nearby paths and woodland areas.

With secateurs, saws, and rakes our team spent the morning clearing the channel of blockages such as fallen branches, debris, and overgrown vegetation. This proactive work ensures that when the rains return, water can flow freely — protecting both the woodland ecology and the access routes for visitors.

It was a warm and satisfying few hours of conservation work, with volunteers enjoying the sounds of summer birdsong and the shade of the trees as they worked. A few walkers stopped to chat and find out more, and there was plenty of time for conversations and a tea break along the way.

Many thanks to everyone who joined us — your effort helps keep Oxleas Woods resilient and thriving all year round. If you'd like to get involved in future sessions, we'd love to see you. Every pair of hands makes a difference.
