Jackwood House Garden
Sunday 19th October, 2025
On the morning of Sunday 19th October, seven volunteers gathered in Jackwood House Garden to continue our autumn work. With cooler weather and soft light filtering through the trees, it was an ideal morning for steady, satisfying gardening.

We split into two groups: three volunteers focused on carefully weeding the beds, while the rest continued the patient task of pruning the wisteria and Old Man’s Beard along the terrace. The garden offered its own sensory rewards — the strong, distinctive scent of the Salvia, the vibrant spikes of bistort, and the soft, delicate blooms of Japanese anemone still holding their colour into late October.
The pruning team worked gradually along the terrace, untangling vines and reclaiming brickwork as they went. We’re now edging ever closer to the fountain, which has been slowly disappearing beneath a curtain of creepers. Trimming back these vigorous climbers not only reveals the garden’s original structure but also helps balance plant competition, giving light and space for a wider variety of species to thrive.

Each session brings us a step nearer to restoring the terrace to its full beauty — and it’s always a pleasure to see the garden responding to our efforts.
